Calviño advocates continuing with reduced VAT on food "even its elimination" given its "too high" price

CÁDIZ, 12 Aug. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The first vice president of the Government and acting Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviño, has shown herself this Saturday in favor of "maintaining until the end of the year the reduction and even the elimination of VAT on basic food items", an initiative that It has considered an exercise to "support the income of families", after claiming that "a positive trend" is verified, as was appreciated this Friday with the final data from the CPI.

In statements to the media in Cádiz, where he reported on the presentation of his candidacy to preside over the European Investment Bank (EIB), Calviño acknowledged the final price data that "what we are seeing is that it continues to food prices are too high, a situation that is being aggravated by drought, climate change and poor harvests".

"What we have to continue to do is continue to take effective measures to cushion the impact of inflation, especially on families", stressed the vice-president in her reflection on the different components of the CPI.

The acting vice-president and minister argued that "our economic policy works in such a turbulent international context", convinced that "the Spanish economy continues to show notable strength", inasmuch as she has defended "strong job creation", together with the fact that "inflation continues to be around 2%, core inflation around 6%, is what the final data for July confirm".

In the same way, Calviño has used the other side of consumption, family income, to then point out that "Spain is the country in which family income is growing the most, 5.4% only in one year" , despite which he has stated that "we have to continue improving salaries and we have to continue, therefore, allowing Spanish families to gain purchasing power as the main instrument to be able to cushion the negative impact of the rise in prices", a circumstance situation that has been framed in the first instance by the rise in energy due to the war in Ukraine.
