The first vice president and Minister of Economy, Nadia Calviño, has ruled out being able to close the reform of the EU's fiscal rules this Friday, although she has assured that it is "close" and that she expects an agreement in the "coming days", including the possibility of call an extraordinary meeting of the economic ministers of the Twenty-seven.

After the "intense" exchanges between the ministers last night, Calviño considers that the negotiation has reached "almost the end" and recognizes "significant progress", which is why he hopes to finalize the pending consultations in the "next few days" and, "if necessary" , will convene a new Ecofin after the summit on December 14 and 15.

The negotiation to agree on the reform of the new rules that, after four years frozen by the pandemic, will once again limit the debt and deficit of the Member States, after the debate was settled without agreement during the early hours of this Friday, which It lasted for about eight hours, until after 3 in the morning.

"The discussions show that there is an agreement in principle on where we want the landing zone to be, but we have not finalized all the elements because some countries need to carry out political consultations at national level and more technical work is needed to iron out the details." , explained the minister, in her role as presidency of the Council, upon her arrival at the meeting with her peers this Friday in Brussels.

Calviño has confirmed in statements to the media that this Thursday a new text was put on the table that, in his opinion, "brings together all the elements under discussion", although it is now pending a political, legal and technical review by the capital, which can delay the process.

"My summary of yesterday's session is that we worked hard during a long and productive night; we are almost there and we have made significant progress," added the vice president, who maintains her intention for the Spanish presidency to reach an agreement on the text before the end of the year.
