Carme Artigas leaves the Secretary of State for Digitalization and AI and will return to the private sector

MADRID, 19 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, Carme Artigas, announced today that next Friday she will leave office and that she will begin preparing her return to the private sector.

This was stated at an event on artificial intelligence and new technologies organized by the economic newspaper 'Expansión', which she stated will be the last public event in which she will participate as Secretary of State.

Artigas thanked the Minister of Digital Transformation, José Luis Escrivá, for the trust placed in her after reaffirming her in the position to be able to finish the stage of the Spanish presidency of the European Union (EU), which ends on December 31.

In this sense, one of the Government's main objectives for the EU presidency was to reach an agreement for the future regulation on artificial intelligence, which is expected to be officially published next May after the intense negotiations that culminated at the beginning of this month.

Specifically, on December 8, the negotiators of the European Parliament and the Council (governments) managed, after more than 35 hours of conversations, to close a historic agreement to establish the first rules with which to limit the risks of artificial intelligence.

Another of the great milestones during Artigas' mandate has been the creation of the National Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence, whose headquarters will be located in A Coruña.

On the other hand, Artigas was selected by the UN last October to co-chair the new artificial intelligence supervisory body and the still Secretary of State has indicated that she will dedicate the next few months to this position and to preparing her return to the private sector.

Carme Artigas has held the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence since 2020 and is a recognized expert in AI, big data and technological innovation who has around 30 years of experience in the industry.

In the business world, she has also stood out for being co-founder and CEO of Synergic Partners, a company that was acquired by Telefónica in 2015.
