Company sales moderate their fall in November to 2.7% and add eight months of declines

The turnover of companies fell by 2.7% last November compared to the same month in 2022, moderating by four tenths the year-on-year decline experienced the previous month, according to the Business Turnover Index (ICNE) published this Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

With the decrease in November 2023, the month in which 'Black Friday' was celebrated, company sales have chained eight consecutive months of year-on-year decreases after having been positive for 25 consecutive months.

Almost all sectors presented negative interannual rates last November, except for services, which increased their sales by 5.7% compared to the same month in 2022.

Among the declines, the supply of electricity and water stands out, which reduced its sales by 26.4%, followed, by far, by industry and commerce, which reduced its turnover by 2.2 and 1.9% compared to to November 2022.

Corrected for seasonal and calendar effects, company turnover also decreased by 2.7% year-on-year last November, moderating its fall by 2.1 points compared to October (-4.8%).

The largest year-on-year decrease in the corrected series was also for the supply of electricity and water (-26.1%), followed by industry (-2.3%) and commerce (-2.2%). In contrast, services increased their year-on-year turnover by 5.3%.

SALES INCREASE 1.3% IN THE MONTH DRIVEN BY 'BLACK FRIDAY'

In monthly values ​​and within the corrected series, business turnover rose 1.3% in November 2023 compared to the immediately previous month, thus registering its largest monthly increase since August 2022.

Of the four sectors analyzed in this statistic, only electricity and water supply reduced its monthly sales (-1.8%).

At the other extreme, with the greatest increase in sales, was the trade that, coinciding with the celebration of 'Black Friday', saw an increase in its turnover of 1.9%.
