FHP: Troopers rescue pelican caught in fishing line on Sunshine Skyway

Two state troopers saved a pelican caught in fishing line with hooks stuck in his feet on the Sunshine Skyway bridge.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Cpl. Timothy Sleyzak and Trooper Raymond Ada spotted the distressed pelican Friday in a median on the foot of the bridge trying to cross the road.

The troopers, along with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Lt. Evan Laskowski, helped bring the bird to safety, FHP said. The pelican, which they nicknamed "Sunshine," was taken to the Owl's Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife. It is expected to make a full recovery.
