LOS ANGELES >> Winds will be the weather story in the Southland Sunday night, as gusts topping out at 55 miles per hour will develop in some places ahead of the coming storm, forecasters said Sunday.

By midnight, rain will spread into the area, and snow will fall above the 6,000 foot elevation, the National Weather Service said in its latest weather assessment. The heaviest rain will fall Monday from just before sunrise to midday.

Above the 6,000-foot contour, snow will fall, a snow level that is well above the Grapevine. But the 5 Freeway, like all arteries in Los Angeles and Orange counties, will likely be quite wet Monday morning, the NWS said.

And another shot of rain is likely later Monday night, lasting through Tuesday night, forecasters said.

Winds out of the southwest-to-south will hit 20-35 miles per hour starting Sunday night, and may top out at 55 mph in some places like the Antelope Valley, the forecasters said.

Those winds will whip snow in the mountains, where 1-3 inches will fall between 6,000 and 7,500 feet above sea level. Higher mountains may get up to 10 inches of snow.
