Germany confirms that the CPI fell to 4.5% in September

MADRID, 11 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The German Consumer Price Index (CPI) stood at 4.5% year-on-year in September, which implies a significant relief compared to the 6.1% rise in prices in August and the smallest increase since February 2022, when the Ukrainian war broke out, according to the second estimate published by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

The harmonized year-on-year inflation data, used by Eurostat in its statistics, reached 4.3% in September, also confirming the preliminary data published by Destatis a few weeks ago.

"The inflation rate has fallen to the lowest level since the start of the war in Ukraine. However, it remains high," said Ruth Brand, president of the Federal Statistical Office, for whom consumers "still clearly notice the increase of food prices".

The easing of inflationary pressures in September reflected a much more moderate rise in energy prices, with a year-on-year rise of 1%, compared to 8.3% in August, largely as a consequence of the base effect of the annual comparison , although electricity was still clearly more expensive (11.1%) than a year before, while drops were recorded for natural gas (-5.3%) and fuels (-6%), particularly in the case of diesel for heating (-26%).

On the other hand, although to a lesser extent, food prices also slowed down in September, with an annual increase of 7.5%, compared to 9% in August and 11% in July.

Thus, excluding energy prices, Germany's inflation rate stood at 5% in September, while excluding food and energy prices, the core inflation rate fell to 4%. .6%, compared to 5.5% in August.
