Reed student fighting for her life after apartment fire

Two Reed College students were hospitalized Sunday morning, one in critical condition, after a fire broke out at their Southeast Portland apartment.

The woman who phoned 911 at 5:15 a.m. was inside the burning unit and passed out mid-call, apparently overwhelmed by the flames and smoke. Crews found her unconscious and not breathing. They resuscitated her in the hallway of the apartment, said Portland Fire & Rescue spokesman Rich Chatman.

Two other women in the apartment jumped from a second-story window to escape the flames.

Neither fire crews nor Reed College officials would release the victims' names. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Several other units at the Garden Park Apartments sustained damage, Chatman said.
