Residents in Spain made a total of 48.4 million trips during the second quarter of the year, which is 8.5% more than the same period in 2022. In this period, total spending rose by 14.4% exceeding 13,335 million euros, with the communities of Andalusia, Catalonia and the Valencian Community being the favorite destinations to travel.

Spaniards this year traveled more and spent more, according to the latest data from the Resident Tourism Survey (Familitur) made public this Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

The vast majority of trips, up to 91.1%, had Spanish territory as their main destination, which represents an increase of 7.6% compared to the same period last year. For its part, trips abroad, which represent 8.9% of the total, increased to a greater extent and increased by 18.1%.

In global terms, during the first half of the year, trips made by residents in Spain increased by 9.1% compared to the same period of the previous year. Domestic trips grew by 6.9%, while trips abroad grew by 35.2%.

Leisure, recreational and vacation trips were the main reason for traveling for 52.2% of residents ( 9.1%), while visits to family or friends represented another 31.7% of the total ( 8.2 %). According to data from the INE survey, the main reason for traveling during the second quarter is leisure, whether the destination is domestic (51.4% of the total) or foreign (60.8%).

In the first six months of 2023, trips to visit family or friends increased by 8.8%, leisure trips increased by 10.3% and business trips by 21.9%. On the contrary, those carried out for other reasons fell by 16.1%.

In 40.4% of trips to internal destinations, residents stayed at the homes of family or friends. More than 17.8 million trips use this type of accommodation, with an annual increase of 11%.

When traveling abroad, hotel accommodation continues to be the preferred option (50.5% of trips). This type of accommodation registers an increase of 13.6% compared to the second quarter of 2022, according to the INE.

During the first half of the year, internal trips by residents staying in the homes of family or friends increased by 8.7%. For its part, trips abroad in hotel accommodation increased by 24.7%.

Regarding the main type of transport used, own vehicles account for 79.7% of trips to domestic destinations, 4.4% more than in the same quarter of 2022. In 68.3% of trips abroad Air transport was used, with an increase of 22%.

In the first six months of 2023, trips by own vehicle increased by 3.5% in internal trips and 14.3% in those made abroad.

The preferred autonomous communities to travel during this quarter were Andalusia (17.2% of the total), Catalonia (13.2%) and Comunitat Valenciana (10.3%).

If the internal trips of residents are related to the destination population, the travel phenomenon is more intense in Castilla y León (with 1,896 trips per 1,000 inhabitants), Cantabria (1,825) and Castilla - La Mancha (1,414).

Trips made by residents of the Community of Madrid accounted for 18.9% of the total in the second quarter. Behind were Catalonia (16.2%) and Andalusia (14.7%).

Eliminating the effect of the size of each community, the most travelers are residents of the Community of Madrid (1,298 trips per 1,000 inhabitants), Aragón (1,197) and Castilla y León (1,161). On the contrary, the fewest travelers are residents of the Balearic Islands (695 trips per 1,000 inhabitants), the Region of Murcia (758) and Andalusia (781).

Total travel spending in the second quarter was 13,335.4 million euros, which represents an increase of 14.4% compared to the same period in 2022. For trips to national destinations, total spending rose by 9.7%. and in those carried out abroad 27.1%, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics.

Therefore, the average daily expense is 72 euros for trips to a domestic destination, and 138 euros for trips abroad.

During the first half of 2023, total spending increased by 21.1%. The growth is 12.2% in internal trips and 45.5% in those made abroad.

In domestic trips, spending in bars and restaurants, which represented the highest percentage of total spending (26.8%), grew by 17.7% compared to the second quarter of 2022. In the case of trips abroad, the Expenditure on transportation represents the highest percentage of total expenditure (32.5%), with an annual increase of 30.1%.

In the first six months of the year, spending in bars and restaurants on domestic trips increased by 19.6% compared to the same period in 2022. For its part, spending on transportation on trips abroad grew by 46.2%. .

By autonomous community, the highest average daily expenses were recorded on trips to the Balearic Islands (110 euros), the Canary Islands (98) and the Community of Madrid (96 euros). For its part, the lowest values ​​were in Castilla-La Mancha (49 euros), Extremadura (54) and Castilla y León (58 euros).

By autonomous community of origin, the highest average daily expenditure was made by residents of the Balearic Islands (100 euros), the Canary Islands (94), Cantabria and the Region of Murcia (both 89 euros). On the contrary, the lowest were in Castilla - La Mancha (75 euros) and in the Foral Community of Navarra, Principality of Asturias and Extremadura (77 euros in all three).
