A man accused of robbing five banks and credit unions over six weeks was arrested Tuesday morning while leaving a motel room on the Oregon coast, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Billy D. Hays, 53, was arrested about 10:45 a.m. in Astoria. He had a parole violation warrant issued on Jan. 25 in connection with an assault conviction and was announced by the FBI on Monday as a suspect in bank robberies from Lake Oswego to Salem.

Hays is accused of robbing Chase banks in Lake Oswego on Dec. 21, in McMinnville on Jan. 10 and Salem on Jan. 19 as well as an OnPoint Community Credit Union in McMinnville on Jan. 24 and a First Federal Savings and Loan in Newborn on Feb. 3.

Hays fled with cash in each case, the FBI said. In some instances, he wore a baseball cap over a stocking cap and in one case he wore a cap that said "FBI".
