The sale of second-hand cars rises 11.3% until February, with 375,152 units

MADRID, 11 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The sale of second-hand cars in Spain rose 11.3% until February compared to the same period last year, up to 375,152 units, while in the month of February alone the increase was 5.6% in relation to with the same month of 2023, with 189,202 copies, according to data from the National Association of Vehicle Dealers (Ancove).

Of the total number of units sold in the first two months of the year, 320,732 were passenger cars, with an increase of 10.9% over the same period in 2023, while 54,420 were vans, whose sales increased by 14.2% year-on-year.

"The 11% recovery of the second-hand passenger car market so far this year has a very uneven performance, as it is explained by the excellent performance of sales in Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha (thanks to the proximity to Madrid) , Catalonia and Aragon. In five autonomous communities, sales are below those recorded between January and February 2023. We will have to see how sales evolve in March, with the Easter effect, but for now we must have contained optimism," the president of Ancove, Eric Iglesias, has assessed.

Regarding the type of engine, 53.9% of second-hand car sales until February corresponded to diesel vehicles (172,730 units; 7.3% year-on-year), while gasoline vehicles had a relative weight of 37.1 % (119,044 units; 9.7%) and gasoline hybrids registered a rate of 2.3% (7,365 units; 32.7%).

For its part, the share of 100% electric cars was 0.8%, with a total of 2,621 copies sold, 65.1% more than in the same period in 2023. The other electrified model, the plug-in hybrid, continued gaining weight: 3,670 gasoline units were sold, 1.1% of the total and 57.1% more, while sales of plug-in electric diesel models grew by 50.7%, to 208 units, 0.1 % of all sales.

Until February, 210,096 vehicles that were over 10 years old were sold, with an increase of 7.3% over the same period last year. Of them, 180,795 were passenger cars, with an increase of 7.6%, and 29,301 vans, with an increase of 5.3%.

In passenger cars, units between 2 and 3 years old registered an increase of 37.5%, although their sales were limited to 10,301 units.

Although the market as a whole registered a year-on-year growth of 10.9% until February in sales of used passenger cars, the most significant increases in the accumulated annual growth have been concentrated in Madrid (39.3%), Castilla-La Mancha (32 .7%), Catalonia (14.4%) and Aragon (10.5%).

On the other hand, the largest decreases until February compared to the same period of the previous year occurred in the Balearic Islands (-4.3%), Castilla y León (-3.8%) and Asturias (-2%). In the autonomous city of Melilla, the drop in sales of second-hand cars was even greater, 8.2% compared to the first two months of 2023.
