TRENTON -- A police officer fired at a drug suspect during a confrontation in the city's West Ward Saturday night, Trenton police said.

The suspect, Dwayne Derry, 52, was not struck by the gunfire. Police arrested him in the area Saturday night. 

The officer was not immediately identified and the number of times he fired was not disclosed.

The incident started at about 8:40 p.m. during an operation by the department's Street Crimes Unit on North Hermitage Avenue, police spokesman Lt. Stephen Varn said.

The officer fired during a physical struggle with Derry, Varn said.

No other details of the shooting and arrest were made public Sunday due to an ongoing investigation, Varn said.

The police's internal affairs unit and the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office are investigating, as per protocol, Varn said.

Derry, 52, is charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, weapon possession charges, resisting arrest, obstructing the law and marijuana possession and dealing offenses.

One of the violations Derry faces is possession of a weapon as a felon.

Records show he has two convictions from 2014, for assault and drug dealing, for which he was sentenced to a county jail term and probation.
