A stretch of Route 46 in Warren County will be down to one lane for six months for road work, starting this week, the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced Monday.

Traffic will alternate in both directions in the area of the work, between Willow Lane in Knowlton Township and Manunka Chunk Road in White Township. NJDOT said its contractor, Intercounty Paving Associates LLC., installed temporary traffic signals and barriers over the weekend to reduce the road from a single lane in each direction to one travel lane.

The closure is needed to allow for slope stabilization and resurfacing work, NJDOT said.

The $3.7 million federally funded project began in September 2016, and includes milling and paving about 5 miles of Route 46 eastbound and westbound in Knowlton and White townships.

In addition, the project will provide traffic signal upgrades, new curb ramps to meet federal disability standards and the construction of walls along Route 46 to stabilize the slope. The project is being accomplished in stages and is expected to be completed in late 2017, according to NJDOT.

Variable message signs are being used throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the resurfacing project.
