The Wyndham Bonnet Creek Resort is one step closer to expanding its convention space after getting preliminary approval from Orange County planners.
The resort, located near the intersection of Chelonia Parkway and Buena Vista Drive, would get an additional 50,000 square feet of convention space if the expansion gets final approval from the county. That would bring the hotel’s total convention space to 300,000 square feet.
The Development Review Committee approved the request Wednesday, pending revisions to a development order, which would allow an extension of the project’s development rights.
John Florio, who represents Bonnet Creek Venture, Ltd., the project’s developer, said hoteliers near Walt Disney World are seeing a high demand for convention space.
Wyndham Bonnet Creek Resort is less than a mile from Disney gates.
“We need the increase to accommodate users we have,” Florio said during the committee meeting.
It’s fairly common for hotels in Central Florida to add to the region’s robust convention and conference space offerings. Orlando again last year secured its rank as the No. 1 meeting destination in the United States.
This is the fourth time in five years that Orlando has nabbed the top spot of a very competitive industry, having been second to Chicago in 2014. The rankings were released in May by Cvent, Inc., an event-management company.
The expansion request will go before the Orange County Planning and Zoning Commission before it advances for final approval by the Board of County Commissioners.
