Is Publix cheaping out on free slices of meat?

The Tampa Bay Times reported the Lakeland-based supermarket chain has eliminated the practice of courtesy slices of deli meat for customers making a deli order.

Like many other grocery chains, customers at Publix could get a slice of deli meat on the house while the deli employee tested the thickness of the meat.

That practice disappeared about two weeks ago, a spokesman for the chain told Times food critic Laura Reiley.

"We are piloting a change in a few dozen delis in Central and southwest Florida to create a more natural exchange between our deli clerks and our customers," says Brian West, media relations manager at Publix, told the Times.

West insisted it was not a cost-cutting move. However, Publix’ stock price has dropped about 11 percent a share since November of 2015 as the chain scoops up sites for expansion into Virginia and other markets.

Publix controls about 43 percent of all grocery sales in Central Florida with 397 stores, according to industry tracker Shelby Publishing. That area covers the region from Daytona to Orlando and all the way to Tampa.

That is more stores than Wal-Mart, Winn-Dixie and SuperTarget combined.

A spokesman for Publix did not respond to a request from the Orlando Sentinel before publication.
