- Almost two decades later, Europe continues to drive global demand for RSPO-certified palm oil

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, April 8, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Almost two decades ago, the European market marked a milestone in the global palm oil trade when a shipment of barrels branded Sustainable Palm Oil Roundtable ( RSPO) arrived in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on November 11, 2008. The shipment from Malaysia contained the world's first shipment of certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO).

Encouraged by strong sentiment across the European market in the early 2000s advocating for more sustainably sourced palm products, several players came together to strategically set the parameters for sustainable palm oil production.

The Dutch market remains one of the strongest supporters of the RSPO. A group of private organizations formed the Dutch Alliance for Sustainable Palm Oil (DASPO) in 2008 with the goal that all palm oil imported to the Dutch market will be RSPO certified by 2015. Not only has this goal been met, but that this national initiative has inspired similar initiatives in several European countries.

As the RSPO celebrates its 20th anniversary in April 2024, the global association reaffirms its commitment to the founding mission of sustainably transforming the palm oil sector, through the collective efforts of RSPO's nearly 6,000 volunteer members. all sectors of the palm. oil value chain in 103 countries and territories. To date, CSPO production exceeds 15 million MT, accounting for 20% of global crude palm oil production.

The RSPO is implemented through robust assurance, complaints and remediation systems, designed to protect natural resources, safeguard wildlife habitats and promote the livelihoods and development of smallholder farmers and rural communities around the world.
