RELEASE: First-of-its-kind clinical study shows benefits of astaxanthin in sports recovery

BRANCHBURG, N.J., March 28, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- A new clinical trial study, published in Frontiers in Nutrition, showed that four weeks of 8 mg daily supplementation of Lycored Astaxanthin offset exercise-induced decreases in 20 immunoglobulins plasmatic The findings were especially significant for levels of IgM, the predominant antibody produced early in an immune response. This was a unique human clinical trial measuring physiological responses to astaxanthin supplementation after intense exercise using untargeted proteomics (500 proteins in all samples) and a comprehensive, targeted panel of oxylipins and cytokines.

The placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized, crossover design study (two 4-week supplementation periods and one 2-week washout period) was conducted in 19 healthy, non-smoking male and female runners, ages 18 to 57 years old. found that astaxanthin supplementation (8 mg/d, 4 weeks) prior to 2.25 hours of running at 70% maximal rate of oxygen consumption (VO2max) had a strong impact on post-exercise dip balance in 82 proteins related to the immune system (20 significantly). Supplementation showed no differences from placebo in plasma DOMS, creatine, cortisol, six cytokines, and 42 oxylipins.

Astaxanthin is a dark red keto-carotenoid found in a variety of foods such as salmon and shrimp, and is produced by algae, which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Humans cannot synthesize astaxanthin, so it must be consumed in the diet through food or supplements.

Lycored uses the carotenoid astaxanthin derived from algae (Haematococcus pluvialis), which has been linked to cellular health, skin health, heart health, joint health, immune system support, and mitigation of oxidative damage and inflammation, according to Elizabeth Tarshish, PhD, head of Claims and Clinical Affairs at Lycored. "From this study, we learned that during recovery, algae-derived astaxanthin normalizes 20 immunoglobulins in those with increased inflammation due to recurrent physiological stress: runners. Our hope is that we offer a natural, plant-based solution with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory drugs can help active people feel and perform their best during and after exercise."
