RELEASE: WordUp, an AI-based English learning app, introduces Fantasy Chat

LONDON, March 23, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 1.5 billion people speak English as a second language. Naturally, they are at a disadvantage compared to native speakers in a globalized world where English is what connects people to opportunity.

WordUp's vision levels the playing field. It is an AI-based English learning app, used by millions of people, with a simple but novel core idea:

English has 200,000 words. You will never hear 95% of them. 5% is enough to have a perfect vocabulary. But what 5%, depends on your particular life, profession, hobbies... WordUp helps you discover exactly the words that matter to you, ordered by their importance (frequency of use), giving you the highest possible value per minute of learning.

Fantasy Chat

Its latest release, on March 17, 2023, allows users to talk about any topic with an AI version of their idols, celebrities, politicians... with more than 10,000 celebrities available on the platform! It's an incredibly entertaining way to practice English and expand your vocabulary.

This innovative AI use case is an example of how Generative AI is redefining education.

The 'active vocabulary' challenge

WordUp was already known for its "knowledge map" concept, which allowed users to turn their vocabulary knowledge into a "digital twin" that enabled hyper-personalized learning. This approach, combined with a wealth of visual learning content, had already made WordUp the leading vocabulary building app, used by millions of people around the world.

But there was a challenge. As in any other app, words were learned in the user's passive vocabulary, not the active one, which meant that they could understand them when they were in front of them, but not necessarily remember and use them naturally in real-time conversations. Moving from passive to active vocabulary is only possible through practice and active use. The new Fantasy Chat feature solves that problem.

About the founders

WordUp was created by serial entrepreneurs Paymon Khamooshi and Somayeh Aghnia. After immigrating to the UK from Iran as students in 2004, they experienced first-hand the challenges of learning English vocabulary.

In 2007, they founded Geeks Ltd (software company, London) and have since created jobs for over 500 people and won several industry awards, including the Queen's Award for Innovation.

Initially an experimental Geeks project, WordUp has grown into an independent company with philanthropic ambitions and impact.
