The year ends and, on the eve of 2023, the good resolutions to have a healthier lifestyle arrive. The physiotherapist and expert in heat therapy Pablo de la Serna, collaborator of Angelini Pharma Spain, proposes some keys and routines to achieve it

Work overload, stress, poor posture or a sedentary lifestyle are some of the causes that can cause discomfort, back pain and contractures. Now that a new year is approaching, there are many people who are considering how to lead a healthier lifestyle. To help make these good resolutions a reality, Pablo de la Serna, a collaborator of Angelini Pharma Spain, proposes some " Small changes that, if they can be turned into routines, will help you feel better and improve your quality of life." More planning and organization "One of the biggest challenges in our hyper-accelerated society is keeping stress at bay," explains the physiotherapist. To avoid the anxiety caused by the accumulation of tasks, "nothing beats planning, organizing and prioritizing; trying to do everything at once generates nerves and frustration," he says. In this sense, "it is more than necessary to learn to say 'NO' and learn to delegate." Changes in diet, more physical activity and restful rest "Starting with the basics, such as eating healthy and regular rest, makes it easier for us to find ourselves better in a short time", explains de la Serna. To do this, you must follow a balanced diet, eat more fruits and vegetables and banish unhealthy fats from your diet. Likewise, "maintaining a routine in the sleep cycle and sleeping a minimum of seven or eight hours a day helps to avoid tiredness and to start the day with renewed energy." Setting aside time for leisure and incorporating exercise into the routine are two guidelines that, "as well as pleasurable, generate endorphins that improve physical and mental health," explains the expert in heat therapy. Incorporating physical activity three times a week "helps us to be physically healthier, but also to release tension and strengthen the muscles." De la Serna advises starting with light exercises, "such as walking, swimming or stretching", since "if you set the bar too high or start with a lot of intensity, you can suffer injuries, as well as generate frustration." In addition, "it is important to save time for yourself and periodically carry out pleasant activities that satisfy us: from going to the movies, reading or spending time with loved ones," insists the expert. Willpower and perseverance, the keys to success It is often believed that in order to incorporate a habit into a lifestyle, the activity to be maintained must be carried out for 21 days in a row, but this is not always accurate. Pablo de la Serna explains that "each person needs a certain time based on their own conviction of how that specific habit will improve their quality of life, but three months is usually a reasonable period in general". "It is important that the goals that each one sets for themselves are realistic and achievable," says the expert. For this reason, it is best to start with habits that are easy to incorporate and gradually add each new routine.Positive mentality For the physiotherapist, the beginning of the year is "a great opportunity to acquire and strengthen healthy habits, such as those mentioned above, but also to start a new cycle with a more positive mentality, which is always the best way to face challenges". In any case, as a consequence of punctual stress and repetitive movements, contractures and back pain can always appear. In these cases, Pablo de la Serna recommends having therapeutic thermal patches on hand. "When musculoskeletal pain occurs, they are very helpful as they increase blood flow, relieve pain and help relax muscles [1]," he concludes.
