TALLAHASSEE — A top attorney working for Florida State University has been arrested by federal authorities and charged with attempted enticement of a minor.

Court records show FSU associate general counsel Dayton Cramer was arrested on Tuesday.

FSU spokeswoman Jill Elish said Cramer resigned prior to the university firing him. Cramer was earning more than $156,000 a year at his job.

Elish said he was arrested off-campus.

An affidavit alleges Cramer responded this month to fake ads posted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in which he thought he was communicating with the stepmother of a 13-year-old girl. The affidavit includes email messages where Cramer allegedly acknowledges the girl's age and describes what he wants to do with her.

Cramer's attorney, Tim Jansen, told the Tallahassee Democrat his client was released from custody Wednesday after a preliminary federal hearing. The newspaper reported that Cramer is married with children and will be under house arrest, with GPS monitoring, as a condition of his release.

"He denies the allegations and we are preparing for trial," Jansen told the Democrat.

Cramer's LinkedIn page says he has worked in FSU's general counsel office since November 2000 and has more than 44 years of legal experience. Before coming to FSU, Cramer served as a U.S. Army colonel working in the Judge Advocate General's Corps, the page says. It says his Army career, which spanned more than 28 years, included three tours at the Pentagon.

It also says he managed eight lawyers in the university's general counsel's office and is a past president of the Rotary Club of Northside Tallahassee.
