Former San Antonio anchor James Keith, who broke from television for a while to join the Bexar County Sheriff's Office as spokesman, has returned to his first love:  TV news.

However, Keith didn't go back to the TV station that employed him for many years, as weekend and weekday anchor, reporter, and most recently, assistant news director: Fox station KABB.

Last week, he started a new on-air job at rival station KENS. He said he was hired as an investigative reporter at the CBS affiliate, presumably to fill the hole left by Dillon Collier, who jumped to KSAT last year to join its "Defenders" team.

"I grew up watching KENS as a kid. It's a dream come true to be working there now. Watching KENS growing up was one of the main reasons I decide to get into this business," Keith said in a phone chat.

It was a warm welcome after an anxious time of being out of work during the holidays.

After 2 1/2 years as chief communications officer for the sheriff's office under then-Sheriff Susan Pamerleau, the incoming sheriff, Javier Salazar, "made us reapply for our jobs," Keith said. "And then five days before Christmas, in an unsigned letter, he said he wasn't going to be keeping any of us.

"A nice Christmas surprise," he added.

Keith said he'll initially do general assignment reports as he transitions into investigative work.

The handsome Keith, who, when single at KABB and anchoring weekends, was a favorite of female viewers -- earning the nickname "Ken Barbie" -- is now married. He and wife Kendra live in New Braunfels with their two kids, ages 2 and 1.
