Judging by the outpouring of sentiment and grief by friends, fans and broadcasting colleagues of San Antonio rock-and-roll radio icon Bruce Hathaway, his funeral will be well attended.

Best known as a KTSA disc jockey in the 1960s, '70s and early '80s, Hathaway was immediately recognizable everywhere he went with that towering frame of his and trim Beat-era beard.

Hathaway also simply was a sweetheart, a gentleman through and through. He died Friday of a heart attack. He was 78.

Because of all the love he attracted, said longtime buddy Gary DeLaune of KENS-TV sportscasting fame, his memorial service has been set at a roomy venue. Details:

Visitation will happen today at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 N. Loop 1604 E., from 6 to 8 p.m.

The service will start at 10 a.m. Thursday at Coker United Methodist Church, 231 E. North Loop Road.

The burial will be a private ceremony.

Meanwhile, here's a  sampling of the hundreds of accolades and memories that appeared on Facebook after Betasus folks learned of his death:

"Looking back, radio was very local and personal in the '60s & '70s. Bruce was the 'bridge' between us and the BIG Rock and Roll World. The end of an Era!" -- fan Brooks White

"A San Antonio treasure and icon. And a sweet, sweet man. -- longtime S.A. radio talk host Chris Duel

"One of my earliest memories of San Antonio radio was hearing Bruce Hathaway on KTSA when it was still music. Even before I knew anything of his history, he was a legend to me." -- fan Lee Hurtado

"Loved him - used to listen to him way back when - later worked with him for over 10 years at KTSA. He was the best guy ever!! He was good friends with the guys from ZZ Top and their manager Bill Hamm - he always took me to their shows back in the  '70s. And we would stand on the side of the stage to watch. Great memories of this gentle giant." -- Mary Marin Lanoue-Gers of Cox radio

"My mentor and fellow Texas Radio Hall of Fame brudda was a great role model, friend and was always there for his friends or strangers. Heaven is a better place with Bruce on the turntables and microphone." -- longtime S.A. radio personality Lee Woods

"My desk was right next to his for years. He was a true gentleman and treated me as such. I loved all his stories." --  Alyce Warr Lehrman, former morning personality at KZEP-FM and KCYY-FM
