Jersey City rec director takes city car home and it's stolen

JERSEY CITY -- The city's recreation director is in hot water after the city vehicle he uses was stolen outside his Sussex Street home.

Kevin Williamson, hired in November 2015, told police he parked his city Ford Explorer on Sussex Street on Monday, Jan. 23 at about 9 p.m. and when he returned at 8 a.m. the next day it was gone, according to a police report.

Williamson did not immediately report the missing car to police. The police report says he walked into the city's east district police station to report the crime at about 12:40 p.m. the Tuesday it went missing. The report says he told police that when he couldn't find the blue Ford nearly five hours earlier, he "walked around the area" to see if he could spot it.

City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said the incident has Mariobet been referred to human resources for review.

"The director violated city policy" that prohibits most employees from taking city cars home, according to Morrill.

Morrill said the Ford was recovered the day after it was stolen at Bramhall Avenue and Sackett Street. Williamson was using it yesterday, according to a recreation department source.

Phone calls seeking comment from Williamson were not returned.

When Mayor Steve Fulop was a councilman, one of his pet issues was trying to restrict access to city cars. Even before he took office as mayor in July 2013, he said his administration would ban all non-public safety employees from taking city cars home after work.

Morrill declined two requests for copies of the city policy on use of city vehicles.

Williamson's annual salary is $117,662.
