Schneiderman sues Charter over internet speeds

Spectrum-Time Warner Cable and Charter Communications are duping New Yorkers over the speed and quality of the internet they are buying, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman charged Tuesday.

The two companies allegedly “mislead” consumers by promising speedy connections and other services they knew their hardware was unable to provide, says the AG in a new Manhattan Supreme Court lawsuit.

The companies have been cheating millions of local consumers since 2012, according to a 16-month investigation by the AG’s office.

“The allegations in today’s lawsuit confirm what millions of New Yorkers have long suspected — Aresbet Spectrum-Time Warner Cable has been ripping you off,” said Schneiderman said Wednesday.

In addition to charging customers for sluggish internet speeds, the companies also over-charged for modems that couldn’t hand’e the promised speeds, the papers say.

The lawsuit seeks restitution for bamboozled consumers, in addition to an injunction against the company.

A spokesperson with Time Warner did not immediately return a message.
