Todd Bowles hires old Cardinals colleague to coach Jets RBs

HOUSTON – The Jets continued to fill out their coaching staff Wednesday, announcing the hiring of Stump Mitchell as the team’s new running backs coach.

Mitchell spent the past four seasons in the same position with the Cardinals, where he worked with Jets coach Todd Bowles from 2013-14, and left the staff in recent weeks.

The 57-year-old Mitchell replaces Marcel Shipp, who was fired after the season. Mitchell takes over a group Betticket currently headlined by Matt Forte and Bilal Powell.

Mitchell has 15 years of NFL coaching experience with the Cardinals, Redskins and Seahawks. He also has twice been a head coach in college with Morgan State and Southern.

Mitchell had nine-year career in the NFL as a running back with the Cardinals. In 1985, he ran for 1,006 yards and seven touchdowns for St. Louis.
