Nissan recalls cars because lowering window can open door

Nissan has recalled three model years of Altima vehicles because incorrectly routed cables may cause the rear passengers doors to unlatch when their windows are lowered.

The recall affects 341,000 Altima 2015 through 2017 models.

The recall was announced by the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Nissan North America, Inc. indicated it will notify owners, although it has not yet provided a notification schedule. Dealers will then correct the cable routing error at no charge.

The manufacturing error affects the rear passenger doors and windows.

"If the rear passenger doors inadvertently open while the vehicle is in motion it may increase the risk of injury to the rear passengers," the recall notice states.

Consumers who want to know if their Altima is on the recall list can call Nissan customer service at (800) 647-7261. Consumers who believe their vehicles are included in the recall but do not receive a letter from the manufacturer can also call NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

In addition, they can search for their car's VIN number on the NHTSA website.

The 2015 Altima has been the subject of eight recalls, while the 2016 model has now had two recalls. This current recall is the only one issued so far for the 2017 model, and it does not affect the 4-door FWD version of the Altima, according to the NHTSA database.

Owners of the affected models will be notified by mail. However, that's only if their car registrations are up to date with a current mailing address, the NHTSA advises.
