If you’ve ever enjoyed a cup of joe at Rosella Coffee or a glass of chardonnay at High Street Wine Co., then you have Kristin Hefty to thank in part for the experience.

Hefty is co-owner with her husband Clay of the Dado Group, a small San Antonio architectural firm that is making a name for itself in the city’s hospitality design.

Dado Group also created the looks for restaurants such as the now-defunct The Monterey, the Granary ’Cue & Brew and Signature, chef Andrew Weissman’s recently opened classy French restaurant at La Cantera.

When it comes to clients and customers, says the 36-year-old Hefty, “I’m trying to do something they haven’t thought of. I want to give them something better than they imagine, what they thought they could have.”

Yes, but here’s the important question: Why do new restaurants always seem so loud these days?

“You want there to be some energy,” Hefty explained. “We actually put some sound bafflers from Bjorn’s in the ceiling (at High Street). There is a sweet spot you try to hit, where you have energy, and yet it’s comfortable. That’s what we go for.”
