Boy shot inside Cleveland home, police say

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A 5-year-old boy was shot in the leg at close range inside his home Monday in the city's Cudell neighborhood, according to police.

The shooting happened about 7:30 p.m. at a home in the 2100 block of West 93rd Street. Several other kids, from toddlers to teenagers, were in the home at the time, police reports say.

Police initially thought the boy was injured in a drive-by shooting after his mother reported the gunshots came from outside the home, according to police reports.

Investigators later discovered that the gunshot wound was consistent with a close-range shooting, police reports say. The boy also had burns around the gunshot wound from a muzzle flash.

Police found a bullet hole in the kitchen ceiling and one in the sink. They found a bullet fragment in the sink and a bullet casing next to an upstairs couch, police reports say.

Officers noted in their report the room smelled of gun powder and found a bloody sheet on the ground next to the bed, police reports say.

The boy's mother initially told police the boy was shot downstairs. The boy's mother refused to cooperate with police at the hospital and refused to allow police to speak with her son, according to police reports.

She told police she had no guns in the home, but police reported finding five guns in the home during a search warrant on the home. Police also found marijuana inside the home, police reports say.

The boy was treated at MetroHealth for his injuries. No arrests have been made.
