Girl expelled for suing school to play on boys’ team can return

A New Jersey girl who was expelled after suing to play on the boys’ basketball team must be allowed to return to her Catholic school, a judge ruled Friday.

Appellate Court Judge Amy O’Connor ordered Sydney Phillips’ to go back to class at St. Theresa’s School in Kenilworth one day after the 12-year-old and her younger sister were blocked from entering the building.

Sydney’s dad Scott said he planned to take both girls to school Monday, according to NBC New York.

Earlier this week, the family was sent a letter from a lawyer for the Archdiocese of Newark barring Sydney and sister Kaitlyn from attending school.

The Phillips’ sued in December after Sydney wasn’t allowed to join the boys’ team this season.
