Medina County Auditor's Office honors Seal Design Contest winners

MEDINA, Ohio - Mason Fortner and Liza Kiefer are this year's top winners in Medina County Auditor Mike Kovack's annual Weights and Measures Seal Design Contest.

Mason, Liza and other finalists were honored at an awards ceremony Tuesday at the Medina County Career Center Cafe.

Mason, a freshman at Wadsworth High School, took first place in the "Inspected and Sealed" category. Liza, a senior at the Career Center, was the top prize winner in the "Price Verification" category.

Both students received a $75 prize.

Their seals - as well as those of the other student finalists - will be featured on gas pumps and cash registers throughout Medina County this year.

The Weights and Measures program, overseen by Kovack, is a state-mandated program to ensure that all devices in the county are working properly, so that consumers can buy with confidence.

More than 200 students from across the county competed in the Seal Design Contest.

Finalists for the "Inspected and Sealed" award were Bethany Baker and Tim Bergan of Wadsworth High School and Wyatt Eckroth, Amber Bistor and Ashton Soliz of the Career Center.

Finalists in the "Price Verification" category were Brandon Rosser, William Karns, Allyson Carver and Alisha Clemens of the Career Center and Sidney Gates of Black River High School.

Two additional students were recognized at the event. Career Center students Seirah Yisrael and Miles Howell have been interning with Kovack's office, and each of their entries has been printed up as a seal, as well.

"We didn't think it was fair to compare their seals to all the other students, as they would have home field advantage," Kovack said.

"But we did want to recognize the outstanding work they do, so we're delighted to be able to show their designs across the county also," he said.

Bryan Lanning is the chief Weights and Measures inspector for the county. Any measuring device missing its seal should be reported to the Auditor's Office at 330-725-9764.
