No injuries when car crashes into Volo Jimmy John's

A car crashed into a Jimmy John's in Volo Thursday morning, breaking through the plate glass windows and coming to a stop inside the store near the cash register, fire officials said.

Nobody was injured in the crash that happened at about 11:47 a.m. at the sandwich shop at 2745 W. Hartigan Road, officials said.

A four-door Honda Accord with two occupants was stopped in a parking spot outside the store when it lurched forward and into the store, Fox Lake Battalion Chief Brent Connelly said.

"For whatever reason, it lunged forward, went through a plate-glass window and 15 to 20 feet into the store all the way up to the register and the counter," Connelly said.

Because of the debris of overturned tables and chairs, the car's occupants needed help from the vehicle, Connelly said.

Two people inside the restaurant and the car's passenger were evaluated at the scene and declined treatment. The driver, an 80-year-old man, was taken for an evaluation at a nearby hospital, he said.

"With it being that time of day, it certainly could have been a lot different if it had been a half-hour later," Connelly said. "I think we were very fortunate."

Volo's building and zoning officials were called to assess the restaurant's structure. Additional panes of glass had to be removed in order for a tow truck to remove the car from the restaurant. The Lake County Health Department was also called to assist the restaurant in disposing of any food that may have been contaminated by the crash, he said.
