DELPHI, Indiana -- The search for a suspect in the deaths of two teen girls last week has expanded, reports say, with police asking people if they might have seen any suspicious people near the area where the crime occurred.
"We're asking people that were driving down the Hoosier Heartland that might have seen a hitchhiker or someone walking," said Sgt. Kim Riley of the Indiana State Police, according to theindychannel.com. "We're asking people that live in Logansport all the way to Lafayette, if they saw somebody late that afternoon, that evening of Monday the 13th, if they saw somebody walking down the roadway that just did not look like they should be there, or they're just a hitchhiker, we would like to talk to that person."
A man who appears in a photograph is considered a suspect in the murders of Liberty German, 14, and Abigail Williams, 13, on the Delphi Historic Trails on Feb. 13. The photo was taken on the same day the girls were killed.
The girls' bodies were found on Feb. 15 in a wooded area about a quarter-mile from the trail.
The unidentified suspect can be seen in the photo wearing blue jeans, a blue coat/jacket, and a hoodie.
"We don't know if the person's a local or a drifter who came in and left," Riley said, the Indianapolis Star reports. "We want to look at any aspect of what somebody might have seen."
The deaths of the girls have drawn national attention, and Fox News reports Carroll County Prosecutor Robert T. Ives, in a post on Facebook, is urging people in Delphi to remain calm.
A house in Delphi was searched last week in connection with the case but no arrests were made. Ives has also asked residents not to "harass, bother or accuse anyone."
"No one at the home searched is suspected of committing any crime," Ives wrote in the Facebook post. "Please, please leave these people alone and let the police work."
