CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The earliest trailer for the upcoming "Spider-Man: Homecoming" showed a fearsome villain in the Vulture, one of the webslinger's oldest and deadliest foes. But the wall crawler will reportedly have another enemy in his next film appearance: The Shocker.

Images of a Shocker toy hit the internet over the weekend after Hasbro Toy Fair attendees snapped pictures at the annual gathering, providing the first look at the villain's appearance in "Homecoming." It remains unclear what part he'll play in the film.

But in the meantime, just who is the Shocker?

Like Vulture, the Shocker dates back to Spider-Man's earliest days, first appearing in Amazing Spider-Man #46, way back in 1967.

His real name is Herman Schultz, and like many Marvel villains, he's a brilliant engineer and inventor who elected to use his genius for personal gain.

He becomes an expert safe cracker, but an arrest and lengthy prison sentence cut his burglary career short.

With no special powers, the Shocker wears a suit that protects him from harm and features gauntlets that fire high-frequency bursts of vibrating air. Schultz built the suit while in prison and first used it to escape.

He beat Spidey in their first encounter, (although in fairness, Spider-Man was hobbled by a broken arm) but the webslinger managed to overcome his initial defeat in their second encounter, pinning the villain's thumbs so he couldn't trigger his gauntlets.

Shocker has engaged in countless shenanigans since then, including blackmailing New York City by threatening to shut down parts of the power grid until it spelled his name across the sprawling metropolis.

The long-time bad guy frequently teams with other Spider-Man villains. He's one of the most consistent members of the Sinister Six, a group of bad guys who banded together following unsuccessful attempts to defeat the wall-crawler.

Shocker briefly flirted with a career as a hero, joining a group of reformed villains known as the Thunderbolts, but he was back with the Sinister Six in his most recent appearances in Spider-Man comics.

Another early Spider-Man villain may also appear in the upcoming film: The Tinkerer, one of the first bad guys the wall-crawler ever faced.

The inventor and mastermind first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #2, and was Spidey's third ever enemy (if you count the burglar that he captured in his first appearance).

After their first encounter, Spider-Man found a mask at the scene of the Tinkerer's escape, implying that he was an alien. That story, however, was quickly retconned, and the Tinkerer became a human who is really good at building things.

The Tinkerer's inclusion in "Homecoming" is a bit of a mystery. He's appeared in the comics only a handful of times and never made much of an impact (in fact, this author included him on a list of villains unlikely to appear in any Spider-Man movie), although with two villains who rely on technology, it wouldn't be difficult to fit him into the plot.
