Arrest made in unsolved stalking, strangulation of woman, 45

LUMBERTON TWP. -- A Taberbacle man has been arrested in connection with the July 2016 killing of a Lumberton woman who was found dead inside her Nassau Road home, according to the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office.

In this combination photo, 53-year-old William Gennett, of Taberbacle, left, is charged with killing Shannon O'Rourke, right, who was 45 at the time of her July 2016 death.

William M. Gennett, 53, of Red Oak Drive in Tabernacle, was arrested on Feb. 8 at his home in the township. He's charged with first-degree murder and fourth-degree stalking.

Authorities allege that Gennett, who was living in Mount Holly at the time of the incident, strangled 45-year-old Shannon O'Rourke on July 5, 2016.

According to the prosecutor's office, O'Rourke and Gennett were friends, but "Gennett was using a cell phone app that allowed him to track her whereabouts without her knowledge" and that the motive for the killing remains under investigation.

Neighbors told NJ Advance Media in the wake of O'Rourke's death that the woman was "outgoing and very nice," but some had spotted two men who seemed out of character for her spending time at the home.

According to the prosecutor's office, Gennett suffered a "medical emergency" while en route to the Burlington County Jail after his arrest and he's now under 24-hour guard at an undisclosed medical facility.

The case was investigated by Lumberton Township Police Department detectives and the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office Crime Scene, High-Tech Crimes and Major Crimes units.
