Jersey City felon facing gun charges

JERSEY CITY - A 20-year-old Jersey City felon was arrested after allegedly firing a handgun "in the proximity of people" yesterday.

Damone Buckhana, of the 100 block of Clendenny Avenue, was charged with weapons offense related to a handgun, including possession of a weapon by a person convicted of a felony, the criminal complaint says.

The complaint says the gun recovered had just been fired based on the spent shell casings recovered at the scene. It also says that Buckhana attempted to conceal or discard the gun prior to his arrest.

According to the criminal complaint made "admissions" in a statement he gave to police. It does not appear that anyone was struck by the gunfire, based on the complaint. The criminal complaint did not say where the shooting incident occurred.

Buckhana was released from jail on Oct. 20, 2016 after serving time for aggravated assault, state Department of Corrections records show.

Prosecutors moved to detain Buckhana when he made his first court appearance on the charges yesterday in Criminal Justice Reform Court in Jersey City.

A detention hearing will be held on Wednesday before Hudson County Superior Court Judge Paul DePascale in the Hudson County Administration Building in Jersey City.
