NJ Transit cops aid Hoboken PD in arrest for drugs, weapon at pubilc housing

HOBOKEN -- A homeless man armed with a BB gun who fled Hoboken Police officers at the Andrew Jackson Gardens public housing complex last month was arrested Monday, the department said, thanks to help from NJ Transit Police.

Marquis Freeman, 28, who lives on the streets of Hoboken but has no permanent address, was charged with possession of a weapon, resisting arrested, criminal trespass and aggravated assault, Hoboken Police said.

Concerns about drug use, illegal entry, and gun violence have all been heightened at Jackson Gardens in recent weeks following a pair of high-profile shootings. In one of them, on Jan. 24, an 18-year-old was shot and killed in his family's apartment, where authorities say there were large amounts of drugs and cash.

Monday's arrest stems from a Jan. 27 incident, when Hoboken Police officers were called to the 300 block of Marshall Drive, at Jackson Gardens, on a report of a man using drugs inside the building, police said.

The officers found Freeman inside, determined he was not a resident, and tried to arrest him, police said. A struggle ensued, and while police were wrestling with Freeman, a BB gun tucked into his waste fell onto the floor, police said.

Police said Freeman managed to free himself and fled. The officers searched the area but couldn't find Freeman, despite help from NJ Transit police, who patrol two nearby Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Stations on the city's western edge.

Officers then determined his identity, and a warrant was issued for his arrest, police said.

On Monday, NJ Transit officers recognized Freeman in the area of the 9th Street Light Rail Station, detained him and called Hoboken Police Headquarters, where officers responded and placed him under arrest, police said.
