Russian hacking a threat to national security | Letter

Some people don't see what the big deal is about the Russian hacking and interference in our election. They like the results and don't care.

Russian President Vladimir Putin.Express-Times file photo  Russian interference in our democracy goes far beyond just hacking a political party's devices and using numerous English-speaking trolls to post fake news and messages on social media to influence the results of our presidential election.

As they've been known to do in other countries, the Russians try to hack literally everyone of importance in our government and politics, including members of Congress, federal agencies, our military and even their staffs. Looking for ways to infiltrate the U.S. government on a massive scale has been the Russian m.o. going back to the days of the Soviet Union and the KGB under Vladimir Putin.

While the Russians may have only been partially successful, anyone they were able to hack may well be vulnerable to blackmail -- or while running for office, having information they would rather not have anyone know being leaked to the public. Of course next time it may not be just at the presidential level or just one party.

Despite the denials, it's very possible Donald Trump and his family, staff, cabinet, and the Republican Party have been successfully hacked and the Russians are holding onto any embarrassing information for nefarious purposes.

Because of these vulnerabilities Russian hacking isn't a political issue; it's an extremely serious matter of national security. It needs to be thoroughly investigated and stopped.
