Son charged in alleged stabbing attack on father

A 68-year-old Cedar Lake man is recovering after he allegedly was stabbed four times by his 21-year-old son in an ambush attack following a verbal altercation.

Ian Watt, 21, of Cedar Lake has been charged with aggravated battery, battery resulting in serious bodily injury and battery by means of a deadly weapon as a result of the altercation with his father that began as an argument over a sword the father took away from Watt due to his erratic behavior, according to Deputy Chief Carl Brittingham with the Cedar Lake Police.

Following the argument, the father left their home in his truck to drive to a nearby relative's home in the 12600 block of Muir Street. Brittingham said the father was unaware Watt jumped into the bed of the truck.

"When they arrived at the relative's house Ian jumped out an attacked his father stabbing him four times in the back with a buck knife," Brittingham said in a release.

The father was able to get into the relative's home and lock the door, Brittingham said. The family called 911 and police were dispatched at 7:18 p.m.

Watt fled the scene southbound on Wicker Avenue in his father's truck, police said. He was located in the 15300 block of Wicker Avenue by police shortly after the 911 call was received. He was taken into custody and transported Sunday to the Lake County Jail.
