Birmingham, Eagle Rock lead CIF L.A. City water polo pairings

One thing became clear when the CIF L.A. City Section released its girls water polo pairings on Tuesday.

Birmingham and Eagle Rock are on a collision course.

Reigning champion Birmingham garnered the No. 2 seed and perennial City power Eagle Rock drew the No. 3 seed, leading a group of seven local teams in the 16-team field.

That means if form holds, Birmingham and Eagle Rock could meet in the semifinals with a trip to the City final on the line and a likely shot at No. 1 Palisades.

Their journeys begin on Friday as Birmingham hosts No. 15 Los Angeles and Eagle Rock hosts No. 14 Verdugo Hills in first-round action.

If strength of league carries any significant weight, Birmingham should have an advantage coming from the West Valley League, which boasts five of the top seven seeds.

West Valley teams occupy seeds 4 through 7.

Granada Hills claimed the No. 4 seed and opens its playoff journey by hosting No. 13 Fremont. Cleveland checked in at the No. 5 seed and hosts No. 12 Santee in its opener. Taft drew the No. 6 seed and hosts No. 11 San Pedro. El Camino Real drew the No. 7 seed and hosts No. 10 Venice.

The City final will take place on at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 18 at L.A. Valley College.

BallerTV to live stream finals

The L.A. City Section has found a broadcast partner for its winter sports championships: BallerTV.

The section announced that the Pasadena-based company that live streams sporting events has agreed to broadcast the section’s winter sports finals. City Section officials touted BallerTV as having a “strong presence on Twitter (@ballerapp).

The most appealing aspect of BallerTV is that fans can download the company’s app and watch a live stream of a sporting event for free on an iPhone or computer without subscriptions or fees. Fans can also watch replays and highlights on a computer.

“We are excited to have BallerTV cover and promote our winter championships,” section commissioner John Aguirre said. “It is our hope that Baller.TV can create more opportunities for our member schools to gain exposure for the many great student-athletes in our section.”

BallerTV is scheduled to live stream the wrestling individual finals (Feb. 18), the girls water polo final (Feb. 18), the Open Division boys and girls basketball semifinals (Feb. 25), the boys and girls soccer finals (March 3 and 4) and the boys and girls basketball finals for Open Division and Division 1 (March 4).

Sonoma State snags ECR baseball player

El Camino Real second baseman Joseph Avrahamy verbally committed to Sonoma State, he announced on Twitter.

Avrahamy has been a member of El Camino Real’s back-to-back L.A. City Section championships. Avrahamy joins Chatsworth rival Josh Medina, who committed to Sonoma State in November.
