NEWARK -- Miles Wood spent his off day on Monday doing what a lot of people dread -- going to the dentist.

Wood lost two lower front teeth after taking a high stick to the mouth during the Devils' 6-4 loss to the New York Islanders on Sunday.

Two root canals and two fake teeth later, Wood looked good as new, and he couldn't help but laugh about it.

"Woke up about 9. Headed straight to get my teeth fixed," Wood said. "I was in there for about two hours. My mom wasn't too happy about it, of course. But I'm glad it's over."

Wood's dad, on the other hand, is plenty familiar with the feeling. Randy Wood played 11 seasons in the NHL, and Miles Wood said his father has four fake teeth to show from his playing days.

"I've still got two more to go to catch him," Wood laughed.

Sunday's hit was the first time Wood has lost any teeth, since he played most of his previous hockey with a face guard in high school and college.

The blood soaked the Barclays Center ice where Wood went down on Sunday, and he skated to the locker room with a towel in hand. But don't worry, he's a hockey player -- he returned to the game a few minutes later.

Despite the gory details of his trip to the dentist, the procedure wasn't too painful, and Wood will be back in the lineup on Tuesday.

"He shot me up with some numbing medication and off he went," Wood said. "It's my third root canal this season. First time with the cage off, so I guess it's catching up with me."
