Former Spur Tracy McGrady didn't stay very long in San Antonio.
But his six-game stint with the team during the 2013 playoffs culminated what could be a career destined for enshrinement in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
McGrady, a seven-time NBA All-Star Game selection who averaged 21.6 points per game over his career, was among those announced Saturday at the All-Star Game.
His playing time in San Antonio was limited as he appeared in six games in 2013 playoffs when he failed to score for a team that advanced to the NBA Finals before losing to the Miami Heat. It was a limiited finish to his NBA career that totaled 31 minutes in the Silver and Black.
If McGrady is chosen he would be the eighth former Spurs player and 10th tied with the franchise's history dating back to its first game in 1967. Other players who are in the hall with a tie to the franchise include David Robinson,George Gervin, Artis Gilmore, Dennis Rodman, Dominique Wilkins, Moses Malone, Louie Dampier. Other Hall of Fame members include ex-Spurs coach Larry Brown and Cliff Hagan from its days as the Dallas Chaparrals.
McGrady joins a list of finalists announced Saturday that includes Big 12 legends Bill Self of Kansas and Kim Mulkey of Baylor among its college selections.
Self notched the greatest achievement in his coaching career in 2008 at the Alamodome when he led the Jayhawks to a wild overtime victory over Memphis for the national championship. It remains the most recent national championship game to be settled in overtime.
Mulkey directed the Lady Bears to national championships in 2005 and 2012 and also was a two-time national championship winner as a player during her college career at Louisiana Tech in 1981-82.
Texas high school legend Robert Hughes, who developed a dynasty at Fort Worth Dunbar and won 1,333 games over a 47-season coaching career, also was nominated for selection.
Former NBA players Chris Weber, Tim Hardaway, Sidney Moncrief and Rudy Tomjanovich also were announced as finalists during an announcement in connection with the NBA All-Star Weekend activities in New Orleans.
Other finalists announced include WNBA legend Rebecca Lobo, former Villanova coach Rollie Massimino, NBA official Hugh Evans, former Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan and Notre Dame women's coach Muffett McGraw.
The Wayland Baptist women's team from the 1950s that was groundbreaking because of its unmatched success also was listed as a finalist.
The late legendary TNT sideline reporter Craig Sager and the New York Time' Harvey Araton will be honored with the Hall's Curt Gowdy Media Award.
Those chosen for enshrinement later this year will be announced during the Final Four at Glendale, Ariz., in early April.
