NBA trade rumors: Knicks fire sale on the way?

It's always something around the Knicks.

From Carmelo Anthony trade rumors to the three-ring circus that was the Charles Oakley saga, New York's basketball team can never seem to operate in a normal fashion.

That includes an attempt at rebuilding.

While every Anthony rumor is interesting, it deflects from the real issue at Madison Square Garden: Re-tooling the whole roster, not just ridding the best player from it and hoping for immediate results.

Carmelo Anthony trade rumors

That idea spurred Newsday's Al Iannazzone to suggest a true fire sale by team president Phil Jackson. From Derrick Rose to Brandon Jennings to Kyle O'Quinn--everyone with value not named Kristaps Porzings--all could be part of a true fire sale in New York.

That said, Jackson and general manager Steve Mills should spend more time finding trades for Derrick Rose, Brandon Jennings and Kyle O'Quinn than Anthony, who can veto any deal.
With Kristaps Porzingis and Willy Hernangomez on the team, and Joakim Noah in the first year of a four-year, $72-million contract -- he's not going anywhere with that deal -- O'Quinn is expendable.
Rose and Jennings will be free agents in July, so the Knicks should try to get something instead of letting them walk to create additional cap space. More money doesn't mean the Knicks will be able to sign any difference-makers, and this season hasn't helped their chances.

The Knicks, even after Sunday's upset win at home over the Spurs, enter play on Feb. 13 with a 23-33 record and 3.5 games out of a playoff spot.
