Ryan Sparks landed the first bass at the annual outdoor show, appearing this week at the Portland Expo Center.
But he wasn't the only successful angler and hunter showing by the thousands through the Expo Center's turnstiles Wednesday.
The Pacific Northwest Sportsmen's Show opened its doors Wednesday after a bit of a gnarly overflow traffic problem at the overflow parking lot (Portland Meadows). The problem was resolved by noon and aisles filled with attendees looking for boats, trips, gear, sales and just plain information.
Sparks, who works for O'Loughlin Trade Shows, but is an Oregon State University graduate and former member of the school's bass club, put on a clinic at the show's warmwater tank, drawing the attention of dozens of anglers and bass, crappie, kokanee and one large carp in the tank.
Drop-shotting, he said, also works for steelhead in quiet water. It's a long-proven method of bass fishing by bringing a lure enticingly along the bottom of a lake or river.
The Sportsmen's Show will be at the Expo Center through Sunday.
Hours Thursday and Friday are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
