Brookville 31, Saucon Valley 30 -- Rapid Recap

Saucon Valley wrestling team's dual-meet season ended with a 31-30 loss to Brookville in the second round of the PIAA Class 2A consolations on Friday at the Giant Center in Hershey.

Brookville led 31-12 before it forfeited the last three bouts after the match was clinched.

Turning points: After Saucon Valley senior Nate Kehs won 3-2 in the ultimate tiebreaker against Tyler Park at 170 pounds, Brookville bounced back with a major decision by Xavier Molnar at 182 and a pin by Noah Cielseski at 195 to extend the lead to 22-6.

The Panthers got a fall from Devin Fontanez in 2:26 at 220 to cut the District 9 champion's lead to 22-12. But Brookville countered with a decision by Tyler Cook at 285 and a pin by Brodie Joiner at 106 to finish things off. "I think Brookville's a great team," Saucon Valley coach Chad Shirk said. "They got knocked off early, but I think our kids fought. We lost some close matches. But I think for the most part we wrestled with heart. We lost to a better team that round. You got to tip your hat off to Brookville."

Top performers: Fontanez had one of the three total pins in the match. Kehs earned a victory in the ultimate tiebreaker for the Panthers.

"After the way we performed earlier, I didn't know what to expect," Shirk said. "There were some good ones with Nate Kehs fighting in a overtime match. Jason Jones wrestled a top-ranked kid (Caleb Hetrick) and that came down to the wire (1-0 win for Hetrick). Obviously, we're not happy. The kids showed some pride and wrestled hard and once again they lost to a really good team"

Cielseski and Joiner had pins for Brookville. Molnar had a major decision and Clayton Peace beat Saucon Valley's Dane Csencsits 2-1 in the ultimate tiebreaker at 160.

What it means: The Panthers end their dual-meet season with a 24-2 record. It was the second year in a row that Saucon Valley saw its season end against Brookville. The Panthers lost 33-24 in last year's state final.

Brookville will wrestle District 10 third-place Saegertown in the third round of consolations on Saturday morning. "I'll tell you what, we didn't have the success we did this year like we did last year down here. But we have a great group of kids. They come to practice and they work hard every day," Shirk said. "I guess the biggest disappointment is that they're a really great group of kids that came together as a team and we didn't get the results that we wanted. But it is what it is and we have to look forward to the individual season." Box score
