Sierra Canyon libero Zoe Fleck pondered long and hard about her college decision.

The more she thought about it, the more Fleck realized that UC Santa Barbara was almost beckoning her to come.

“The environment at UCSB just felt right to me,” Fleck said. “When I was thinking about my next four years, UCSB just felt right.”

So Fleck verbally committed to UCSB this past week, taking a burden off her shoulders as she enters her senior season next year.

Fleck said she also had offers from Princeton and San Diego State while receiving strong interest from Pepperdine and USC, but UCSB was too much to pass up, especially with an opportunity to make an immediate impact.

“Ultimately UCSB was the place for me,” Fleck said. “I really liked the girls and all the coaches as well. Plus I’ll get an excellent education and I get to play the game I love at a high level.”

Fleck has been considered the top libero in the area. Fleck earned Gold Coast League MVP honors and first-team All-CIF accolades, helping Sierra Canyon capture its first CIF Southern Section crown and its first Southern California Regional victory.

Fleck said she has no doubt about her college decision.

“UCSB felt like the best place for me to figure out who I am and who I want to be,” Fleck said.

A grand milestone

After Melissa Wright’s second basket of the game last week against Flintridge Sacred Heart on Senior Night, Chaminade coach Kelli DiMuro called time out.

After all, it was Wright’s 1,000th career point.

DiMuro and her staff surprised Wright with a quick ceremony to commemorate the moment and to present her with a ball that documented her 1,000-point career, making it a Senior Night to remember for Wright.

“She’s always been so consistent, and she’s been on varsity for four years,” DiMuro said. “She’s really upped her game this year.”

Wright has been an invaluable member of a Chaminade program that won back to back CIF Southern Section Open Division titles and last year’s CIF State Open Division crown.

Maybe more remarkable is that Wright reached the milestone despite not being the No. 1 or No. 2 option until this year.

Wright averages 17.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 1.2 assists per game for Chaminade, which returned to the Open Division as the No. 13 seed and opens the playoffs at No. 4 Sierra Canyon on Saturday.
