Tiger drops next two events due to back spasms

Tiger Woods will not compete in his next two scheduled events due to back spasms that caused him to withdraw from the Omega Dubai Desert Classic prior to the second round last week.

In a statement on his website, Woods said he will miss next week's Genesis Open and The Honda Classic, which is set to start Feb. 23.

"My doctors have advised me not to play the next two weeks, to continue my treatment and to let my back calm down," Woods said. "This is not what I was hoping for or expecting. I am extremely disappointed to miss the Genesis Open, a tournament that benefits my foundation, and The Honda Classic, my hometown event. I would like to thank Genesis for their support, and I know we will have an outstanding week."

Woods, 41, plans to determine his playing schedule going forward after his back is reassessed.

When he dropped out of the Dubai event, his agent, Mark Steinberg, said the problem was not related to nerve issues that have plagued the 14-time major champion over the past few years and have resulted in three surgeries, the most recent coming in August 2015.

Woods had shot an opening-round 77 prior to withdrawing.
