Chino Hills’ spectacular sophomore guard LaMelo Ball scored 92 points in a wild 146-123 victory over Los Osos on Tuesday. The Baseline League game was the first game for Chino Hills since having its 60-game winning streak snapped on Saturday by Oak Hill Academy (Va.), 96-91 during the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei.

Ball, who has verbally committed to UCLA where his brother Lonzo is one of the top freshman in the country, was 37-of-61 from the field and was 30-of-39 on two-point field goals. He splashed 7-of-22 from 3-point range and was 11 of 14 from the foul line. He also added seven assists.

Ball’s 92 points were the second most in CIF Southern Section history. Mesrobian’s Tigran Grigorian holds the all-time record, scoring 100 against Pacific Christian in 2003.

It all happened while Ball’s older brother, senior LiAngelo Ball, sat out to nurse a nagging ankle injury.

Although the headlining performance caused LaMelo Ball to trend on Twitter and other social media, Los Osos head coach Dave Smith wasn’t thrilled with a fourth quarter in which Ball scored 41 points in eight minutes.

Smith told the Los Angeles Times that Chino Hills players were intentionaly fouling late in the game to stop the clock to get more possessions for Ball.

“That’s wrong,” Smith said to the Times. “It goes against everything CIF stands for. The Ball boys are very talented and great players, but it’s embarrassing to high school athletics. I’ve been coaching for 35 years, and we’ve turned high school athletics into individualism.

“It’s amazing to watch a kid score that many points. But it’s tough to say that’s what CIF athletics is about.”
