Grammy-winning Tejano star Jose "Joe" Lopez, who was convicted about a decade ago of raping a child, must undergo a nine-month sex offender treatment program before he is allowed to be released on parole, according to the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles.

Lopez was initially approved for parole in early January, with plans for him to partake in a four-month Sex Offender Education Program.

But after receiving additional information, a panel decided to modify their initial release decision to require Lopez to complete a longer education program, said spokesman Raymond Estrada of the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles.

Lopez was convicted on two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and a count of indecency with a child and was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2006.

After Lopez completes the program, he will be released and must register as a sex offender, along with other stipulations.

Lopez was one of the foundering members and singers of Grupo Mazz.
