Former Sonoma County Supervisor Efren Carrillo has joined the board of the Center for Climate Protection, a Santa Rosa-based nonprofit group focused on combating climate change.

Carrillo stepped down from his seat, representing western Sonoma County, on the Board of Supervisors after the end of his second term in December. He was voted onto the organization’s eight-member board at the end of January, said Ann Hancock, the executive director.

Hancock said the center sought out Carrillo in part because of the group’s “very productive and long relationship” with him, including work on development and launch three years ago of Sonoma Clean Power, the public electricity supplier.

Hancock called Carrillo a “champion” of the agency and said he is well equipped to be a spokesperson for encouraging the spread of such public power entities through out the state.

Carrillo has a bachelor’s degree in environmental economics and policy from UC Berkeley.

His 5th District seat is now held by Supervisor Lynda Hopkins.
