SAN ANTONIO — A man arrested early Friday allegedly fled the scene of a reported shooting downtown by driving the wrong way on Interstate 35 before crashing his truck, throwing a gun onto a nearby home and fleeing on foot, according to police.

The incident occurred at about 3 a.m. Friday near the 1000 block of North Main Avenue, where police responded to reports of a shooting in progress. Upon arrival, officers were not able to locate a victim.

Officers did observe a male slumped over in the driver’s seat of a Ford truck near the scene. When officers approached the vehicle, he drove off. Officers determined the vehicle was stolen, according to a preliminary police report.

The suspect headed south on San Pedro and entered Interstate 35 from the off-ramp for Main Avenue and Lexington and drove the wrong way on the highway, a sergeant said at the scene.

Police deployed a helicopter to track the vehicle, the sergeant said. It's unclear if vehicles pursued the suspect on the ground while he was traveling the wrong way on I-35.

The man ended up in the 100 block of Toltec on the West Side, where he drove around in circles for about 35 minutes before crashing into a fence and fleeing on foot, the sergeant said.

He then reportedly threw a handgun onto the roof of a home and ran south. He was arrested a block away without further incident.

The connection between the initial shooting call and the suspect is still under investigation.
